Présentation

Le japonisme s’est révélé dans la deuxième moitié du XIXe s. comme un des ferments de la modernité occidentale par son opposition à l’académisme. Mais la période de transition entre la révélation des arts du Japon et l’institutionnalisation de la japonologie (1890-1924) attend toujours son historiographie. C’est en effet pendant ces années, entre réception artistique et réception savante, que l’image du Japon s’est pleinement intégrée à l’histoire des représentations, au point de concurrencer l’influence de la Grèce. Thème fédérateur particulièrement inspirant pour une recherche collective, le japonisme ne peut être vu comme un phénomène isolé. Le projet vise à dégager sa singularité dans une perspective comparatiste, et à analyser les causes et les effets de son évolution esthétique.

From the second half of the 19th century Japonisme has proved to be one of the ferments of Western modernity by its opposition to academicism. But the transition period between the revelation of the arts of Japan and the institutionalization of Japanology (1890-1924) is still waiting for its historiography. It was during these years, between artistic reception and scholarly reception, that the image of Japan became fully integrated into the history of representations, to the point of competing with the influence of Greece. A unifying theme that is particularly inspiring for collective research, Japonisme can not be seen as an isolated phenomenon.The project aims to highlight its singularity in a comparative perspective, and to analyze the causes and effects of its aesthetic evolution.
